Day 1 of 7 days of motivation messages

So I am back and to celebrate (means get back into the swing of things) I am going to deliver a small post for 7 straight days. The subject will be about your thinking, about being positive and taking action.

untap your leader that is already inside you – make twenty12 your year

Garry.

Day 1 Focus on the Important Things

It is very common for people to focus their energy on things that are not important.  When your emotional energy is spent on things that are not important it can be very draining.

The first thing you need to do is to be very clear about the things in your life that are important to you.  Create a mission and a vision for your life and your goals.  These things are important to you.

This way, when you become upset about something you can take a step back and decide if it really is worth the energy or not.  In most cases you will find that you are wasting energy and getting upset about certain circumstances and things that you shouldn’t.  This can be unhealthy.

When you are clear about the important things you will maintain a positive attitude and you will not get upset as much.

Are You Plagued with Procrastination?

have you started taking action in 2011 or are you stuck???

are you procrastinating?

If you’re one of the few people who isn’t plagued with the problem of procrastination then you’re blessed beyond all measure.  This thief of time can quietly rob you of precious minutes, yea hours, before you realise they’re gone.  You search for them and wonder where the time has gone, but it’s too late.

The task you intended to complete today was put off until tomorrow and there was good reason to do so, but you can’t remember why just now.  Procrastination comes in many disguises.  It’s called rationalisation sometimes.   You say, “I didn’t get started on that project because the weather was too hot or I didn’t have all the parts.”  One can always come up with many good reasons to delay a project.

Procrastination can become a habit and if you keep putting off getting new habits then procrastination will be your constant companion.  We find ways to delay a task because there are other things more important to do.  Many times these are merely excuses such as checking your email, playing an on-line game or surfing the TV to see if you’re missing something interesting.

You must recognise a real reason to delay as opposed to just an excuse not to do something you don’t want to do.  Ask yourself if that job really needs to be done and if your answer is yes then get it done and then reward yourself for a victory over procrastination.  When the job is complete, step back and assess what you’ve done to see if it was worth the time and effort.  Perhaps you were procrastinating for good reason, but that’s rarely the case.

Lack of direction can cause you to procrastinate because you’re not sure what to do next.

Disorganisation could be the father of procrastination.  Get organised with a to-do list with the most urgent at the top.  Make a deal with yourself that you cannot do anything else until you accomplish at least one thing on the list.  You can make giant strides with tiny steps.

Huge projects can be daunting whether you’re writing a book or building a house.  You can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel because the elephant is standing in the way.  Cut a slice out of that elephant one day at a time and soon it will be gone.  A small manageable task is much more palatable than trying to swallow the entire project.  No matter how small the success it’s another step toward completion.

Make a decision on what needs to be done and do it.  Even if it’s wrong at least you’ve done something.  Indecision can cause major delays in both your business and personal live.  It’s easier to make a decision if you create a list of the pros and cons of what needs to be done.  Once you have a clear direction, your mind clears and the path becomes apparent.

Fear of failure can cause procrastination.  The failure lies in never getting started.  Difficult and dreaded tasks are rarely as bad as they seem at the beginning.  Stop procrastinating today.

Don’t put it off until tomorrow.

Drought and flood

this weeks 2 minute video is on the cycles of drought and flood (of actions).

We make new years resolutions and end of financial year plans and have a flood of activity, then like the seasons often slide back into a drought of activity.

3 things to look at this week
1. What do you want to achive in 2011
2. Are you someone that has the drought, flood, drought cycle yes/no?
3. Make a step by step plan and get some accountability

twenty11 is soon here

Garry Wells

So another year is coming to a close soon. Here are some questions to answer just before you switch off for the Christmas/NewYear period.

What did I do to finish 2010 in a better position than I started it?
What clear direction have I set for 2011?

or maybe these are questions for you:

Did I give 2010 all I could have?
Did I take consistent action on my plan or did I wimp out a bit?

or maybe:

Am I going to do something different in 2011?
What actions am I committed to in 2011?

————–

The first set of questions are for some of you – those action takers – celebrate and let me cheer for you as you are a special group

The 2nd set of questions are for some of us (yes me included) – celebrate your honesty and the great steps you did take.

The 3rd set of questions are for all of us – lets make 2011 a great year.
If you have some answers to these questions I would love you to share with me via email to garry@untappedleadership.com
if not don’t panic – I may have something coming out soon that could help.

Personal note from Garry:

I pray I may have done something to inspire you or help you in some way this year.

Have a great end of year, enjoy Christmas, relax when you can and above all get ready to take action in 2011. It can be a great year for all of us.
